Announcing 3 fully funded joint ADS & Insight PhD studentships
We are excited to announce that 3 PhD projects will shortly commence, fully funded by Science Foundation Ireland (an award of around 0.5M€). The PhD students will spend their studentships between Insight Centre for Data Analytics (Ireland) and up to 1 year at an Amsterdam Data Science partner. This marks a further step in this already strong collaboration and an excellent opportunity for PhD students to benefit from the joint expertise. Watch this space, as these vacancies will be advertised very soon.
The 3 awarded projects are summarised below:
1. Project Title: “Smart Partnerships” to develop STEM competencies that transform lives to live and thrive in a complex connected global society
Partners: Insight, Amsterdam Data Science (ADS), Microsoft Inc.
Supervisory team: Professor Deirdre Butler (Insight), Dr Tara Cusack (Insight), Dr Kevin Marshall (Microsoft), Dr Jacco van Ossenbruggen (ADS), Dr Aoibheann Bird (Insight).
Project summary: This project will leverage open source user friendly app development software as a vehicle for Education and Public Engagement (EPE). Engaging in specially designed workshops children (preteens-teens), will design apps relating to health enabling them to develop, technical skills, build understanding of digital health, and most importantly data analytics concepts.
2. Project Title: Deep Neural Networks and commonsense reasoning
Partners: Insight, Amsterdam Data Science (ADS), Nokia.
Supervisory team: Dr Alessandra Mileo (Insight), Professor Frank Van Harmelen (ADS & VU Amsterdam), Dr Alessandra Sala (Nokia)
Project summary: This work focuses on enhancing Deep Learning architectures with knowledge, thus bridging the gap between knowledge-driven and data-driven approaches to deep representation learning. The approach will generate better representations that can enable faster and more effective generalisation and transfer of learning across tasks and across domains.
3. Project Title: Smart Wound Analysis for Bacterial volatiles (SWAB)
Partners: Insight, Amsterdam Data Science (ADS)
Supervisory team: Dr Aoife Morrin (Insight), Professor Jaap Heringa (ADS & VU Amsterdam)
Project summary: This project involves delivering on new, innovative and cutting-edge approaches to skin monitoring to gain targeted physiological information that underpins health status. The proposed approach here will work towards a clinical diagnostic tool capable of analysing the microbial population of wounds via volatile emission profiles, to permit the early detection of bacterial infection.
