VU Science on Stage: The computer as a fellow human being

Are you interested in top research and would you like to be updated on the latest developments in science? Then come to ‘VU Science on Stage’: a new series of free public lectures by top scientists from the Faculty of Science at the VU.

On Tuesday 24 March, AI professor Frank van Harmelen will kick off with a lecture entitled ‘The computer as a fellow human being’.

Much of the current research on AI is aimed at replacing human activity. Self-driving cars may replace taxi drivers, translation computers replace interpreters and image processing algorithms replace radiologists.

However, it is becoming increasingly clear that computer intelligence is something quite different from human intelligence. It makes no sense at all to replace one with the other. On the contrary, it is more interesting to build AI systems that can work with people, with a mixed team of people and computers performing better together than individually.

We call the combination of artificial and human intelligence Hybrid Intelligence. During the lecture, Frank van Harmelen will elaborate on making AI technically suitable for collaboration with people.
