AI and The Government

You may not realize it right away, but you too are guided and influenced by all kinds of algorithms on a daily basis. Those shoes that you just viewed on a webshop, why are they suddenly in your timeline? And although this may sound innocent, the technology behind it is applied in a much more subtle and influential way.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is being used in more and more sectors, including the government. And where this technique was first received with great optimism – for example, it would lead to less sexism and discrimination in recruitment – we now also know its major downside. The surcharge affair is the most intense example of this. About 26,000 families fell victim to an automated system that worked on the basis of AI.

What problems does the Dutch government actually have when it comes to using algorithms and how did this arise? What is needed to improve the situation? And what are we doing at the AUAS to contribute to a solution? This afternoon we zoom in on this on the basis of different perspectives. We do this with AUAS researcher Ivar Timmer, artist Tiwanée van der Horst and digital strategist Ilyaz Nasrullah. The discussion will be led by AUAS researcher and lecturer Dorien Zandbergen.
