Big Data meets the International Entrepreneur: Alternative Export Markets for the Netherlands’ Trade Affected by the COVID19 (Corona) Virus

The outbreak of the Corona virus has disrupted the global value chains of all countries that trade intensively with China, the source of the outbreak and the country most affected. Consequently, many exporters in the Netherlands have been negatively affected and have had to find alternative export markets on short notice or suffer a financial loss.

Martin Cameron and Wim Naudé will demonstrate that “big data” on international trade can be used to identify realistic alternative export opportunities for exporters when affected by a sudden collapse of an established export market. They will demonstrate the use of a prominent analytical tool (the TRADE-DSM) and its dashboard, showcasing a number of its applications.

The lecture would be of interest to all data entrepreneurs in the Amsterdam Data Science network who are investigating potential international markets for their products and services, as well as to the relevant Dutch Ministries involved in promoting exports and entrepreneurship. Prospective students who are looking for data-based research topics could also be interested, e.g. application of deep learning to predict risks in export finance or to global supply chains. The focus will be on agriculture, given the importance of agricultural exports for the Netherlands.
