Best Paper Award for UvA &VU Computer Scientists

Best paper award for Ismail El-Helw

A team of computer scientists from VU and UvA (including PhD student Ismail El-Helw and scientific programmer Rutger Hofman) have won the best paper award at the 5th International Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Computing for Large Scale Machine Learning and Big Data Analytics (ParLearning) in Chicago, 27 May.

The paper, called “Scalable Overlapping Community Detection” is joint work between the High Performance Distributed Computing group of Henri Bal and the Machine Learning group of Max Welling. It discusses how to parallelize a machine learning algorithm for the detection of overlapping communities within large graphs, such as social network graphs. The parallel algorithm can process record-size graphs with billions of edges and tens of millions of vertices on a 65-node DAS-5 cluster.
