ADS Coffee & Data offers the opportunity for researchers and business to share their knowledge and give insight on a central theme, specifically on Tuesday 08 November this will be on Data Science in Sports & Healthy Living Analytics. There is also a chance to network with a cup of coffee.


08:45 – 09:00 Welcome reception with coffee

09:00 – 09:05 Introduction and Chair:  – Ben Kröse, Professor in Digital Life (HvA, UvA)

Speakers (20-25 minutes per presentation including question time)

09:05 – 09:30 – Hans van Beek, Computational Biologist,Amsterdam Diabetes Research Centre (AMC and VUmc), will present on

“Computational modelling of energy turnover in professional cyclists”

We will have a look at computer modelling of the human body during intense exercise such as a mountain time trial in the Tour de France and during a mountain stage in the Giro d’Italia with subzero temperatures. In particular we look at body temperatures and energy buffering in muscle. Physiological knowledge on the human body is combined with characteristics of athlete, terrain and weather.

09:30 – 09:55 – Michel Klein, Assistant Professor in Behavioural Informatics (VU), will present on the Active2Gether project, a project which tries to stimulate young adults to increase their physical activity.

09:55 – 10:20 – Marije Baart de la Faille-Deutekom, Professor in ‘Kracht van Sport’ (Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences/HvA) will present on the BAMBEA project, a project which uses sensor technology to stimulate outdoor exercise.

10:20 – 10:40 Break

10:40 – 11:05 – Marcel van der Kuil, Entrepreneur in Sports & Health Tech, will present on “Innovating the Marathon.. with Data Science”

We will discuss the ‘Marathon Revolution’, as a new methodology to run marathons, in a more sustainable way. Quantified Self, Data Science and Behavioural Science will be key topics during the presentation.

11:05 – 11:30 – Franc Klaassen, Professor of International Economics (UvA), will present on

“Analyzing Wimbledon – The Power of Statistics”

The game of tennis raises many challenging questions to a statistician. Does serving first in a set give an advantage? Or serving with new balls? These, and many other questions can be formulated as ‘hypotheses’ and tested statistically. Thus, can the outcome of a match be predicted (even while the match is in progress)? In this presentation, tennis (Wimbledon in particular) will be used as a vehicle to illustrate the power and beauty of statistical reasoning.
